PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho ordinary meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Those present were: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), Councillors List, Brocklebank, Townsend* Anderson, Truemm, Jones, and Cox. Lady Guinness wrote thanking the council for its oxpfession of sympathy in regard to her recent bereavement—Received. The secretary of the Hutt No-License League forwarded a copy of a resolution paissed by the leaguo' to tho cffect that it was grateful to the council for instructing its delegates to vote against the sale of liquor at Hutt Park.—Received. The Petone Cricket Club applied for the use of three pitches on the recreation ground for the coming season.—Referred to Recreation Grounds Committee. The Freedom League asked permission to hold a publio meeting at the recreation ground on the afternoon of Sunday, July 20. They also asked to be allowed to tako up a collection.—Granted. Tho Horowhenua • County Council forwarded copies of resolutions re representation on hospital and harbour boards, and asked the council's assistance—Referred to member of the Hospital Board for a report. Tho District Health Officer wrote thanking the council for its to-operation in tho distribution of wall sheets and stating that it was not necessary for their inspector to bp appointed an officer under tho Act for this work.—Letter received and inspector impowered to act. Councillor Anderson moved: "That the motions accepting tho resignation of Councillor Wright from the position of delegate on the Hutt Park Committee, and tho appointment of his Worship the Mayor to fill tlio position be rescinded." Councillor Jones seconded. In the discussion tho Mayor said that, councillors had had 34 hours' notice! and that complied wttli the standing orders. Councillor Anderson, in replying, referred to the "blind followers" of the Mayor and the way in which the notices were delivered. Tlie motion was lost. Councillor Townsend asked if any communication has been received from Councillor Findlay, or if his Worship could say what action he intended to take regarding the "breeze" at last meeting. The Mayor stated that he would answer Councillor Townsend privately. A deputation of ratepayers from the Percy Estate, Islington Street, urged several improvements to the council, drainage and lighting being the most urgent. It was decided to go into tho matter in committee, tho Mayor assuring tho deputation that they should have a "square deal." The engineer's report indicated that .£l2 in building permit fees had been collected during tho month. Regarding (he septic tank, COG cubic yards of concrete had been placed in position. Wages for Juno had totalled JJ253 13s. lid.; plant and material ;£199 Is. 7d.; total, ,£452 )ss. Gd. The inspector's report mentioned that two enses of diphtheria had occurred during the month, and that licenses amounting to ..Cfi 17s. Gd. had been taken out. It was decided that the authorities bo notified regarding a case of an infectious disease in the Petone Main School.
