NEW CITY BY-LAWS.
| BEFORE THE COUNCIL. The By-laws Committee of the City Council presented a set of draft by-laws to the council last enening, having for their purpose prevention of fire, cleanliness of markets, setting up motor-ear stands, and prevention of the hatpin nuisance. The proposed by-laws dealing with markets are as follow:—"(1) No person shall sell or exposo for salo any foodstuffs in any auction mart, or other premises in tho city, unless such foodstuff is stored on a platform or counter, at least two feet above tho level of the floor. This regulation shall not apply where foodstuffs are stored in boxes. (2) No person shall expectorato in any auction mart or in any premises where foodstuffs are sold by auction ay otherwise in the city." Another proposed by-law, to apply 'to motorists, reads: "No person shall in the city uso a 'silencer cut out' on any motor-car or motor cycle, or any other self-propelled vehicle of similar type."
The fire prevention by-law proposes to do away with clauses 717 to 723 of by-law No. 1, and tho substitution of some ten clauses. Ono of these _ provides that no occupier of anypremises shall deposit any live cinders or line ashes, wliether within or without any building, save in a reqeptaclo constructed of cast iron or other equally incombustible material.
The council decided to defer consideration till next mooting.
