The Court of Inquiry which was sot up to investigate the cause of the collapse of one of the boilers of ft 1 Northern' Company's steamer on a voyage, -vi'om the U'hamcs to Auckland has concluded. 'Ihe Court found that, the collapse of two.of the furnaces of the starboard boiler was
"serious damage" within the meaning of Section 238 of the Shipping mid j':aihen Act: that the only reasonable inference l'roin the cvidonco was that the colhp.se was due to shortness, of water in the boilers, causal by excessive scumming, for which the second engineer, John (i-itdon, was held responsible, ilis certificate was suspended for tliTee months. The Court, also found that tho chief engineer, William Appleby, had not shown duo appreciation of his duties and responsibilities in matters calling for his superv : _si jij, but thought that the ends of justice won'.! bo met if ho paid tho costs of tho inat.-iry. Orders were made accordingly. IMPUDENT YOUNGSTER. Blenheim, July 8. A Senior Cadet was charged in the Magistrate's Court' to-day with insubordination on parade in answering a sor-geant-major in a contemptuous manner. When warned three times he.repeated the offence. The magistrate remarked on tho seriousness 6f the offence against dis-~ cipline, and fined him 20,5. and costs. MARSHALLING AN AQUARIUM. Christchurch, July 8. Mr. L. F. Ayson, Chiof Inspector of Fisheries, is obtaiuing suitable fish for. a fresh-water aquarium for the Auckland exhibition. This evening ho left for Wellington, taking with him some fontinalis eggs, which are to be hatched tit sonio North Island hatchery, and sent on to the exhibition aquarium. QUINNAT SALMON. Christchurch, July 8. Mr. L. F. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Sea Fisheries, who returned from the West Coast on Monday oveniug, informed a reporter that ho had just conveyed a quantity of quinnnt salmon eg?s from the Wa'itaki to the temporary hatchery established by-the Marine Department on one of tho tributaries of the Hokitika lliver. He anticipated that the qninnat salmon, which have been established in the Wnitaki for three years, will gradually spread to other East Coast rivers. The Department has decided to stock one ol the West. Coast rivers, and, on Saturday, Mr. Ayson will take over to Hokitika a further supply of eggs.
