THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBx Glencos.l There will be racing at Flemington this afternoon, but the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase will not bo decided until Saturday. After tho Gisborne races, W. J. Porter went to Carterton to givo Nedra a final schooling o t ver tlio big fences before the Trentham meeting. Mr. Vallanco's mare is now one of the best backed candidates in the race. There will bo a race meeting at Eangioni next Saturday. G. Price will reach Trentham from Awapuni on Monday next. He is bringing Adelipia and Nyland to the meeting. I{. Young, who usually rides Nyland, is ill at present, but Price is hoping that by Wednesday next tho jockey named may bo well chough to take tho mount on the big horse in tho Hurdles. In the event of his being too ill to do so, S. Reid may be offered the mount. Mr. II- Coyle, handicapper to the Gisborne Racing Club, has returned to Wellington after officiating, at' his club's winter meeting. Mr. R. H. Skipwith, tlio well-known starter, is suffering from an attack of pneumonia. His condition during • tho last few days has been causing his friends some anxiety. Mr. J. C. Williamson, whose death is recorded, was a liberal supporter of the turf in Australia.' Among good horses ho owned wero Bluo Book, who deadheated for first with Aborigine in the Caulfield Cup, and Cadonia, who won tlio A.J.O. St. Leger •in tho colours of Messrs. Williamson and Mansfield. Tho late Mr. Williamson was not afraid to give a good price for a yearling, and he generally had a useful horse or two in J. A. Mayo's stable. It is not known jet who will liavo the monnt on Aberbrothock in the Hurdles at Trentham- There may be some difficulty in finding the right horseman to •uit the son of Papakura. Tho New Zealand'jockey, H. R. Cairns, had the mount on Wimmera in the Grand National Hurdles on Saturday at Flemington. Cairns was making his second appearance, since resuming riding. F. D. Jones is riding well at tho present time. Ho had a run of success at the Auckland Christmas meeting, but then came a dull period. 110 is now at his best again, and rode four winners at the Gisborne meeting. A little additional interest attaches to his riding, as a Hastings resident recently made a substantial wager that ho would not ride half as many winners as Deeley during tho season. It is quite possible that tho wager may ;yet be lost. . If Jones rides some. winners at Trentham and Deeley remains on his present mark, tho Hastings resident will have to pay. It is understood that Mr. W. T. Hazlett (Southland) .will move against any future racing conference business being transacted in committee. • Though Kilrain and Awahou divide favouritism for the Parliamentary Handicap; it may be as well to mention that Haskayne is in the same race. Awah.iu has anything but tho best of the handicap in being .placed within two pounds of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's gelding. Tlio manner in which Haskayne ran away with tho York Welter at Auckland suggests that the Birkenhead gelding is now back to his best form.

C. Coleman arrived by the Mokoia from Auckland yesterday morning. He brought the 'chaser Iloanga, who was railed on to Trentham.

■ At Gisborne last year,-A. J. MTlynn rode the winners of the > four steeplechases, Armngh (2) and Taialia (2), J. Deerey just failed to accomplish a similar performance this year, Napper Tandy (2) and Donzel. Tho latter should have won the big steeplechaso the first day many think.

A. Oliver, who recently went across to Sydney, rode his first mount (Sir Artegal) into second place. It should bo mentioned, however, that there were only two starters-in the race.

Tho presence of Phroso in the Parliamentary Handicap makes it appear Mint the fashionably-bred mare is quite souur,, and she should not. lack supporters at Trentham next week. ~

Judging by the acceptances received for the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, Kauroa is to be reserved for the Urautl National meeting at Riccarton, while his stable-mate, Glenmore, will do battle lor tho colours at Trentham. Last year Glenmore ran disappointingly in the mud at Trentham, but, going south, ha did surprisingly well at Riccarton.

.So far the riders of Crown Pearl ?nd Royal Arms have not. been announced. The first-named'appears to 1)® well handicapped in tho opening event at Trontliom, for he shaped particularly well under heavy weight at Ellerslje recently..

The Riverton trainer,- J. Thistelton, will says a correspondent, leave Invercarjjill on Wednesday morning for Trentham, with the steeplechasers Kin. Ora, Spo-ts-i))an, and Royal Medal, and also llio hurdle racer Red Earl, which horses are to race at tho Wellington R.C. Winter meeting. The stable jockeys, F. Ellis and W. Feilding, accompany the trainer, and will Tide the horses ill their .respective engagements.
