THE SMALLPOX OUTBREAK.
GOVERNOR VACCINATED. ToUeraDh—Fr«n Association—CoorrtiM Sydney, July 8. Pour thousand persons wero vaccinated yesterday. Tho outbreak is already having an adverse effect on tho shipping. Somo of tho companies aro arranging to omit Sydney as a port of 0011. All are arranging for tho vaccination of the crews, and aro advising passengers that they must be vaccinated. Large supplies of lymph are en rout© to Sydney from Melbourno and New Zealand. Sir Gerald Strickland, tho State Governor, and his staff wero amongst those vaccinated. Mr. Cook, Federal Premier, declares that he is determined that tho position must bo firmly gripped; tho spread of tho disease mtist be checked at any cost. (Roc. July 9, 1.10 a.m.) Sydney, July 8. Forty-eight cases were quarantined today, of which ten are patients and 38 convalescents and contacts. There aro now 191 persons, all told, in quarantine, consisting of 67 patients, G1 convalescents, and 63 contacts. The authorities hope to-morrow to discharge a considerable proportion of the contacts whoso vaccinations have been successful and probably eight or nine convalescents who are now free from in ; flection. Supplies of lymph have arrived from Melbourno and New Zealand. Tents will bo used as public vaccination depots. No lymph will bo available this week for private practitioners.
