PIGEON PRESENT TO CAPTAIN HALSEY.
AND THE GAME LAWS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wanganui, July S. With reference to the l'rcss Associatioa telegram stating that tho council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society con-, sidered that steps should bo taken against the shooters of certain native pigeons which wore presented to Captain Ralsey when \at Wanganui, a "Chron< lcle" reported interviewed. Mr. li. N. Liffiton (secretary of the local branch of tho society, and a senior Justice of the Peace. He elates that ho was present at the official visit paid to tho warship, and saw gifts of sheep, deer, pigeons. game laid out on the deck;'of tlid vessel. No other presents were taken out at any other timo, and, so far as he saw,there was not a native pigeon among the lot. Ho considers that tho Wellington cdtinciHs labouring under a misapprehension. The pigeons were thoso shot at a • recent meeting of the Wanganui Gun Club, and were not given by ilie Maoris. In common with other game, they had been kept in cold storago till tho warship's arrival. ■Other officers of tho society interviewed expressed amazement at the interference by the Wellington body before it had first ascertained whajt the position wis.
