— : e AN APPEAL. Aii appeal has been lodged from the decision of Sir Joshua Williams in the action which attracted'considerable public attention a few months ago, under the titlo of the "Southland Coal Case." Tlio appeal is to como up for hearing in Wellington at an early date. The Government will be represented, as it was at the hearing, by the Hon. A. L. Herdman (Attorney-General). Tho original case aroso out of a claim b.v Mr. Gavin Brighton that tlio Government, in selling him tho freehold of a small .'.■asc-iji-perpetniity section, had parted with tho mineral rights as well as surface rights. Tho caso was tried in tho Supremo Court at Invercargill, before Sir Joshua Williams,, who decided that only the surface rights to the land liad\been parted with by the Crown., •'
