POLICE AND PROMISES.
: $ . MINISTER'S EMPHATIC DENIAL. Constable Baker, of' Auckland, according to statements published locally, has accused the Minister foi; Justico (the Hon. A. L. Hcrdnuin) of o> breach. of faith. Tho constable is under orders to transfer from Auckland to Gisborno and he claims that this represents a violation of the promise made by the Ministtr when ho heard tho grievances of members of the force in Auckland,, that, whatever they said would not bo held against them. When tho matter was mentioned to Mr.. Herdman yesterday ho made the following brief-statement: "I have nothing to say. at present except this: that the state- . ment that there has been any "breach of faith is incorrect. The whole thine will no doubt be dealt with at a proper time and in, a proper manner, in the House."-
