SCHOOL BUILDING SCHEME.

WINNING DESIGN. Messrs. John Campbell, Government Arohitect, end G. A. Troup, Government Railway Architect, have announced the result of the competition for the block of school buildings to be erected by tho Wellington Education. Board in Upland Road, Kelburne. The announcement was made in the presence of the chairman of tho Education Board (Mr. Robert Lee), Mr. J."G. W. Aitken (member of tho board), Mr. T. It. Fleming (Chief Inspector), and Mr. J. S. Tennant (principal of the Training College). The winning design was that of ilr. W. Gray Young, of 'Wellington. Second place was awarded to the design of Messrs. Atkins and Bacon, Wellington, "and third place to Messrs. Hart and M'Leod, Chrisrtchnrch. ■ Several designs of considerable merit were commented on by the judges, but were set-aside on account of exceeding tho~fiost.' " The designs which came in for the favourable comment were sent in by Messrs. Salmon arid Vanes (Dunedin), Mr. (t: Kobb '(Wellington), , two independent designs, and Mr. J. A. Swan (Wellington). The site of the buildings is on each side of 'Kowhai Road, off ' Upland Road, Kelburne. The Training College is to be on the east, and the Normal School and Infant School on "the west. "The" Infant School is to bo . proceeded with almost immediately, and the board has arranged to confer with Mr. Young, with a view, to complete plans and specifications being prepared. Tho scheme of buildings, when completed, will run into a sum exceeding ,£IB,OOO. Tho winning design provides for buildings' with pressed Drick base and piers, and rough cast above, roofed in Marseilles tiles. The buildings are designed according to the latest ideas in elementary school architecture; and include a selfcontained hall," i with provision for hot water heating, aijd • porfect ventilation. All the designs will be on view in the Board Room, Mercer Street, this afternoon and evening, and also to-morrow afternoon. The names of the competitors were opened in the presence jpf"the. board' officials and others, after the winning dosign had 'been "declared.
