FRANCE IN THE PACIFIC.
BRITISH INDIFFERENCE DEPLORED. By Telegraph.—Press Association— Copyright Sydney, June 24. The "Herald," referring to the annexation of the Wallis and the Futuna Islands by tho French, says:—"lt is said with truth, in the Pacifio that we have lost foothold after foothold on more than half of tho groups of Oceania, which, first evangelised by British missionaries, have fallen into foreign hands. Tonga is now tlio only other protectorate of importance, and there are many who believe that Britain's delay in annexing this group may provo dangerous, and that tlve wisest policy would be to hoist the flag at once. If those great colonial Imperialists, Sir George Grey and Sir Henry Parkes, had had their way, tho British flag might to-day be flywf? across the Pacific from east to west, for all these islands might have been ours."
