CORPORATION INSURANCES.

Sir,—From press reports I liavo noticed that a representative of a largo insuranco institution has tendered for tho Corporation's firo insurances, and that tho tender was last week recommended by the Finance Committee for acceptance, but was referred back to tho committee by tho council, upon tho ground that since the committee's recommendation tho local insurance companies had asked tho Mayor to receivo a deputation from them to discuss tho merits of tho offer recommended for acceptance. I gather, further, from The Dominion of Juno U that, although tho conferenco was private, your representative was informed that the insurance companies had decided to amend the terms upon which they havo been doing business with the Corporation m tho past, and that tho two offers would bo considered by tho council at a special meeting 011 Juno 19. I am only ono anions thousands of citizens who aro interested in this matter of firo insurance, and, as a man of business, what strikes mc as singular is that a tender lias been recommended for acceptance and its terms published: yet tho companies who wero tendered against are (after having learned their competitor's terms) prepared and liermilted to amend their terms. There peems to be danger of injustice being done. Tho competitor (whoever ho is) has disclosed to the council that the city has been subjected in the past to rejl.riclions (average clause and other warraniiirs\ and has offered to remove them (vide Mayor's remarks at last council meeting as reported in "New Zealand Times" of June 13). Now, it seems that the person offering special fldvanttiws to iiio council is threatened with tlio loss of llie fruits of his good services to the city, and, according to this moraine's panel's, the whole business is to be debated by tho council in committee. Why in committee, when the matter was discussed last week in open council? Peril, ins you, Sir. may lie able to throw somo light 011 what I (as a citizen and ratennyer) regard as a subject of far-reach-ing iinportanco to tho community.—l am, etc., SQUABE DEAL.
