WHALE AT CLOSE QUARTERS.
SPECTACLE FOR PATEENA'S PASSENGERS. Tho Pateena, on her run from Pioton to Wellington on Saturday afternoon, arrived down at th© mouth of Tory vhannel in tho nick of time to see tho capture of a fine big whale by a party from tho well-known whaling station at To Awaite. Wholes aro evidently fairly plentiful in tho Straits at tho present time, for as tho steamer passed To Awaite the men were still trying-out one that had been caught thrco days earlier. As the steamer got into the last reach of the Channel a great commotion was seen to bo taking place at tho entrance. A whale, about 50 or GO feet in length had strayed in unwarily and had been promptly pursued by a party under Mr. Parano. The huge animal had been securely harpooned and •was rushing from side to tide of the Channel, closely pursued*"'by-Mr; no's speedy launch. At times it came into close quarters with tho Pateena, which was slowed down to allow tho passengers a view of thp unusual spectacle. The chase was still proceeding, but was evidently nearing its end, when tho r&teena steamed out into tho Straits,
