INFECTED SHIP.

(By Telesrapli.—Presa Association.) Auckland, Juno 13. By the Atua, which arrived at Auckland this morning from Sydney and Island ports, further news was received of the recent outbreak of smallpox on the steamer; Michael .Jebson at Apia (Samoa). It aippears that tho Michael Jebson. a Qeiman steamer of 1251 tons, arrived at Apia on May 18 from Hong-Kong with over 1000 Chinese coolies on board. These were under • contract to work on the plantations in Samoa. Prior to the vessel reaching Apia a case of smallpox was discovered amongst the coolies, and the steamer was ordered to an anchorage outside the harbour. - No communication whatever was allowed between the .ship and the sliore, and the affected patient was removed in a barge about seven miles along the coast, where he was placed under strict observation. The Atua arrived at Apia on Juno 3, and up to that date no one had landed from or boarded the infected steamer. It was reported, however, that several mane oases had broken out amongst the coolies. On tho discovery of each, fresh case tho captain of the Michael Jebson had to heave up his anchors and steam up tho coast so as to land the patient on ono ,of the barges. Everything possible was being dono to stamp out the diseaso when the Atua left Apia.
