BLENHEIM.
The annual meeting of tho Wairau Licensing Committee was held on Thursday in tho Blenheim Courthouse. Thero were present: Messrs. Loughnan, S.M. (chairman), J. B. l'ayner, G. Maitland, H. Jellynian, W. Ching, aud J. M'Kinley. Tho police reports in some of tho applications stated that tho houses in question had been, conducted "fairly ■well." Mr. Ching asked what that expression meant; tho commiltco did not want "fairly well," it wanted "good." Tho chairman impressed upon the applicants the significance of Mr. Ching's comment. The Mahakipawa Hotel was allowed to change its name to Hotel Linkwater, the application for a renewal being adjourned for three months, pending certain building improvements being effected. The first of tho series of cuohro tournaments conducted by St. Mary's Old Boys was held on Wednesday night. The prizewinners were Mr. P. O'Brien and Mr. H. Avery.
