LATE SIR A. GUINNESS.
FUNERAL ON FRIDAY. CURRENT POLITICAL RUMOUR. (By Telegraph— Special Correspondent.! Hokitika, Juno 11. Great numbers of messages of sympathy have been received by Lady Guinness, touching the death of her late husband, Sir Arthur Guinness, Speaker of the House of Representatives. The funeral is to take place on Friday, and the Government will be represented by tho Hon. A. L. Hordman. Tho political atmosphere is of eoursc disturbed, but there is not much to report. Rumour has been very busy today, and several additional names are beiupr handed about as probable candidates for the now vacant Grey seat. It is freely reported in Labour circles that Mr. P- J. O'Regan, who is the solicitor of the Federation of Labour, may carry the Federation colours instead of Mr. P. Webb. Mr., O'Regan represented the old Inangahua constituency in 1893, and was successful in beating Mr. J. Colvin for tho Duller scab in ISfIC, being, however, beaten later by Mr. Colvin. Several other names arc also in tho nir. Mr. Jesse Steer, an ex-Mayor, and a prominent business man and leading Freemason, may como out, and Mr. T. U. Byrne, a leading supporter of tho Socialists and a solicitor, has also been mentioned. Matters will- no doubt take shape at tho end of the week, but, whatever happens, a very interesting contest is certain.
