THE SMALLPOX SCARE,
NO SERIOUS DEVELOPMENTS. (By Tolejraph.—l'resa Association.) Auckland, Juno 7. Tlio caso of the young Maori mail Tallin, which was reported to tho police from Mangere yesterday, has been definitely pronounced by the Assistant District Health Officer (Dr. Monk) to bo chickenpox. The .Maoris occupying tho same house have been isolated. A favourable report was issued this morning concerning tho occupant of tho hospital isolation ward at Point Chevalier, Jiniies Rukutai, a half-caste Maori, who was reported on Wednesday to bo suffering from smallpox. Ho is said to bo making a good recovery, and it is liopod tliut the virulence of his complaint will won havo subsided. This is the tenth day of tho illness, and ono or two of tho doctors who wore emphatic in declaring the caso to bo ono of smallpox stated to a reporter this morning that although they had not since seen the patient, they had heard of certain symptoms which ho had subsequently siiown that were hardly in keeping with his condition when the diseaso was first discovered. This pointed to tho fact that the Maoris must ba affected in i different way to Europeans. It might be that a race liko Maoris, which lmd not suffered much from such diseases, would take chicken-pox in a very violent form, thus giving it the appearance of something still more serious. However, the nature of Rukutai'a oaso still, appeared to 'bo in doubt. No further cases havo lx-eu reported.
