Sage, who was 89 years old, was born in Canterbury, England, and camo to New Zealand witii tho 58th Regiment, in 1845. He was engaged at the Okaihu during Heke's war, and later in the attempt to storm Ueke's pa at tlio Ohncnrai, and was present at tho taking of tho pa Ruapekapeka. Deceased also saw service in tho Wellington district at Wanganui, and was also in tho Waikato Wars. lie was tho last survivor of the regiment.

Mrs. Helen M'Dowell, widow of the late Mr. Win. M'Dowell. formerly of tho firm of Messrs. Barry and M'Dowell, builders and contractors, Wellington, passed away on Friday last at tho residence of her daughter, Sirs. Jacob M'Eldowney, Ilobson Street. Tlio deceased, wlro was 75 years ,of age, was a nntivo of Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, and had been a resident of New Zealand for over d 5 years. Mrs. M'Dowell lwd been in indifferent health for some years past, and her death was not altogether unexpected. Her husband died twelve years ago, and her only son died six years ago. Her son-in-law. Mr. Jacob M'Eldownoy, is a partner in the firm of Messrs. M'Eldowney Bros., warehousemen, Jorvois Quay. Tho Allen Iloone Dramatic Company arrived from Picton on Saturday night, and will leave for Mastcrton this morning. Tho company will return :to the Opera House at tho close of the pantomime season, to play a week's season before leaving for Australia. Mr. Clive Farnham, one of the members of the company, w'hose engagement has terminated, will leave for Sydney on Friday next to join the Buckler Company, now playing at the Little Theatre. Tlio Rev. J. Dawson, secretary of tho New Zealand Alliance, arrived from the south by the Maori yesterday. Mr. H. L. Solomon, of Wellington, is/to leave this week for America, via Australia. ' The teachers of tho district, Pays a Tress Association telegram from Timaru, made a presentation on Saturday to Mr. J". A. Valantine in recognition of hi? scrvico as secretary of the District Educational Institute, whic'ln position ho has resigned on being appointed secretary of the Education Board.
