MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Beforo Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. A young man named Wm. Pye was brought before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., at tie Magistrate's Court on Saturday, on a charge of having attempted suicide. The oil'cnco took place at Newtown on May 23 last, Sand sinco that date Pye had been receiving medical treatment. Inspector Hendry stated that Pye, who was a sorter in the General Post Office, was a man of good character, but had been unwell, and was a little despondent. Ho attempted to shoot himself through the body with a service riile, but tho bullet glanced along the ribs. His Worship ordered Pye to pay expenses'amounting to i£3 125., entered a conviction, and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. LOCAL "CHARACTER" ASSAULTED. On Juno 5 last a familiar character in tho streets of Wellington, to wit, Jesse Underwood, was assaulted and robbed of tho sum of ,£2 55., and a purse valued at 2s. 6d., by Walter Thos. Miles. Mr. P. Jackson appeared for tho accused.
Upon the application of the police. Miles was remanded until Jun6 11, bail being allowed in tho sum of and ono surety of ,£SO. CHARGES OF THEFT. John Clias. Gandry, Thos. Quinn, and Emil Mcgean wero jointly charged with having stolen from the s.s. Paparoa, at Wellington, on Juno G, four scarves, ono pair gloves, and five pairs stockings, valued in all at .£1 13s. Gd., tho property of tho Now Zealand Shipping Co., Ltd. Detective-Sergeant M'llveney asked for a remand until June 13. This was granted. Mr. Percy Jackson appeared for Gandry and Quinn, who wero allowed bail in tyie sum of .£2O and two sureties of <£10. For stealing a roil of flannel, valued at .£l, the property of Horaco John Archer, Emma Crawford was fined 205., with costs Bs., in default seven days' imprisonment. John William Lucas admitted that on May 27 ho stole a whip valued at 155., the property of some person unknown. For committing the act he was fined .£2. OTHER CASES. A sentence of threo weeks' imprisonment was imposed upon John Shannon, described by the polico as -an 'idle and disorderly person, who consorted with reputed thieves. Charles Enticott, charged with having used certain objectionabjo language in a public place, was fined £i, with costs 45., in default fourteen days' imprisonment. Fines for insobriety wero inflicted on: James Turner, who was ordered to pay expenses amounting to .£1 Is., in default 48 hours' imprisonment; Sidney Cox, who was fined 10s., or 18 hours' in gaol; and John Patrick Coylo, fined 405., with tho option of going to gaol for seven days,
