SUPREME COURT.
FIRM OF "VALENTINE AND GO." MADE BANKRUPT. Bing, Harris and Co. applied to have John Ferguson and M. Ferguson (his wife) adjudicated bankrupts. Mr. A. Dunn appeared in support of tho application. It was stated that the affidavits filed were to tho cffect that Fergusons, who had been trading at Petone and Lower Hutt as Valentine and Co., were ,£B2 in debt to Bing, Harris and Co., and .£Bl in debt to Abbott, Oram ami Co. It was added that on May 31, John Ferguson left Wellington, and that before leaving, he had said that he was in trouble over a lease and was going to "clear out." Further, it was put before tho Court that Ferguson had sold the Petone business, and that the Lower Hutt shop was in the possession of h creditor.The Court made an order of adjudication. COMPENSATION CLAIM. LAW POINTS. The Compensation Court concluded the hearing of evidence in the action in which John James Boyd claimed .£2OOO as compensation from the Wellington City Corporation for alleged depreciation (through the alteration of tho street) of land and six houses in part of Queen's Drive which was formerly known as CbiUlers Torraco. His Honour Mr. Justice Sim presided, and the assessors were Mr. William Ferguson (for the corporation), and Mr. A. L. Wilson (for Boyd). Sir John Findlay, with him Mi. D. M. Findlay, appeared in support of tho claim, and Mr. J. O'Shea, city solicitor, opposed it. When tho evidence was; concluded Sir John Findlay said that as Mr. O'Shea had raised the question of whether tho road was or was not a permanent way, he would like an adjournment for the purpose of calliuK evidence on tho point. His Honour suggested stating a case for tho Court of Appeal on the question of whether a road formed in part was a permanent thoroughfare.
Tho case was then adjourned till 0.30 on Tuesday morning for tho calling of evidence as to the dedication of tho street.
