Sir —Your interesting notice this week concerning the impossibility in obtaining houses to rent is indeed too true. Houses are not to be obtained. Why? Because building has ceased for over 3 years, and now tho march of progress hap caught up, nnd tho demand cannot -ba met. llouses are wanted. Wliy. don t capitalists build or finance buildinmP Welin"ton and suburbs offer a biff field, which, if in England or America, would be rushed; but wo are too blow. . Sooner or later other people will come in. alia , local residents, owners, financiers, builders, merchants, timber merchants, buckmakers, fltc., will woko up too late, and find outsiders grasping tho opportunity now offering. Wellingtonenterprise .is dead. In England this stato of affairs would not last a week, lly opinion is that tho people of New Zealand arp too independent and well off. Let ihcin go to England, say, London. Every penny there counts. Hero in New Zealand money is littlo thought of. Well, if this is the case, why don't owners or the capitalists who liavo tho money build houses. They will fret fair returns.
