Sir,—ln your issue of yesterday you publish a long statement by Mr. W. Kitchio, who is evidently worried regarding the welfare of our municipal fish market, and as 'I - have-had! sonlo experience:,of tho market, I am submitting replies to my friend's questions. Mr. Kitchio asks.— (1) "Whit quantity of-fish is sent to the destructor iroin tlio market? —Answer: Very little; and only when it is unfit for food. , . (2) "Does the municipal market pay tor the destruction of fish at tho destructor, as private firms have to do? —Answers Yes, it is charged against the market. (3) "Why is fish at the market offered to private shopkeepers for nothing if they will take it away P"—Answer: The question is too solid for me, and ought to be referred to an expert in mental gymnastics. (i) "Do the ratepayers know tho real position of things, and what it is costing them'"-Answer: Yes; and the great majority of them to whom I havo formally talked believe that the small loss made by the market is balanced by cheap lish, and that they get a fresh fish to boot. (5) "Do they know that fair prices tiro realised in other markets, and nothing is sent to tho destructor'"-Answer: Huncombe." , , If Mr. Ritchio is anxious to develop our fisheries, ho ought to canvass the House Late Manager Municipal l'ish Market.
