A largo and representative gathering of tho footballers of Canterbury assembled in Christcliurch on Tfinrsday evening last and mado a presentation to Mr, W. G. Garrard, in recognition, of his services to Canterbury football during his tenure of office na socrotary of the Canterbury Kugby Union from 1894 to 1913. Messrs. Cedrie A. Herman and Archibald C. Middloton, of Christchurch, were last week admitted as barristers at tho Supremo Court, Christchorch.

Mr. R. I). Kolly, whose appointment as Assistant Chief Postmaster in Wellington was announoed in Sdturdny a Dominion, entered tho service as a cadet in Napier in 1883. Six years Inter lio was transferred to Auckland, and, in 1903, lie was appointed senior registered letter clerk in Wellington. A year later he was promoted to bo a sectional clerk in tho accountant's branch of tho General Post Office, and in 1907 was placed in charge of the monevorder division: From that ho rose to be accounts clerk, and in December, 1910, became accountant in the Chief Post Office, Wellington (the officer in charge of the P.O. Savings Bank and Money Order Office). Mr. Kelly is a keen ljowler, and is a well-known member of the Wellington Bowling Club. He is being succeeded as accountant by Mr. R. W. Porter, whp has, -with the exception of one year at Dunedin, been stationed in ever since he entered the service 35 years ago. He lias been in charge of the accountant's branch there since 1903. Mr. Porter is a keejij horticulturist, and has been ail office-bearer of the Presbyterian Church, Invercargill, for eoveral yoars, latterly as secretary. Sir John Findlay returnod to Wellington from Nelson by the Mapounka last ! evening.

Mr. Joseph M'Cabo. tho scientific lecturer, arrived from too south yesterday. At tho conclusion of hia tour in Now Zealand, Mr. M'G'ube will return to 1 Australia, and then go on to Cape Colony and South America. Tho staffs of tho signal and electrical department of tho railways assembled in the Social Hall, Lambton, on Saturday at noon, to make a presentation to Mr. A. After congratulatory speeches had been made, Mr. A. Morris responded. The death occurred at Inwcargill ycxterday of Mr. Robt. F. Cuthbort6on, aged 73, a very old resident of Southland, and for mnnr ycar9 secretary of t'lie Southland A. and P. Association. Ho recently retired from that position owing to ill-health and advancing ago, and his end was not unexpected.

Mr. J. J. Grealish, who is shortly leaving the staff of the "Evening Post to join that of tho "Daily Telegraph, Sydney, was farewelled by a largo number of his friends, ■ journalistic ana otherwise, in tho Pier Hotel on Saturday night. Tho health of Mr. Grealish was proposed by tho chairman. Mr. E. C. Huie, of Christchurch, who had launched him, some fitteen years ago, on his journalistic career. The toast was supported by M&<*rs,K, Fletcher (chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board), M. Myers, J. R. Gibbons ("Evening Post"), F. It. Reeves ('Evening Post"), C. Weston (Dominion), and K Armit ("New Zealand Times'). All tho speakers testified to Mr. Grealish s ability as a journalist, to his sterling honesty and to tho geniality and kindliness of his character. On behalf of tho company, and of many others unablo to attend, tho chairman presented Mr. Grcalish with a uurse of sovereigns. Tho toast was received with tho greatest enthusiasm and Mr. Grealish acknowledged tho compliment in suitable terms. A number of musical and other items of entertainment were given during the evening. Apologies for absence wore received from the Hon. W F. Massey, tho Hon. A. L. Herdman, Mr. C. W. Enrle (The Dominion), and Mr. M. C. Keano (Christchureh "Press").
