TRAFFIC INSPECTOR'S CHAUFFEUR ■ FINED.
(By Mcffra-ph.-Spccial Correspondent.) I Auckland, Juno 1. While riding on a tramcar recently » constable saw a motor-car flash by at wliat lie described as 50 miles an hour. Clouds of dust prevented him taking the number of the car, but ho subsequently identified it, nnd tho driver was summoned for driving at a dangerous speed. When tho case came on in tho I'olico Court on Saturday it transpired that tho motor-car had been chartered by tho assistant traffic inspector, in order to pursue some other motor-cars which were going at an excessive siwod, necessitating tho pursuing car travelling at an oven greater pace. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., smilingly explained that this was 110 defence. It seemed like a caso of sotting a thief to catch ft thief, or a case of the catcher caught. . , ~ . ~7,1 Tho driver of the taxicab, Adrian " ilkins. whoso car was thus coimnandcercd by tilO assistant traffic inspector, was convicted. and fined 10s. and costs. It was suggested that doubtless Hie Citjr Conncil would square up matters with him.
