SIGNAL-BOX BURNT.
IT THE WOODVILLE STATION. 1 ; Woodville, May 27. The signal-box at tho railway station was burned down last night at 930 o'clock. The cause is supposed to bo tho heating of a stove-pipo. Owing to a thick fog' the fire was not seen from tho town, and only the blowing of online whistles attracted people towards tho station. . The service will not bo interfered with, as the men worked- all night, and were able to work the points this morning. DRINKING 4 UNDERFEEDING. ALLEGATIONS RE CAMP, Gore, May 27. Rumours are ourrpnt here that there has been much drinking in connection with tho Otamita military camp, nine miles from Gore, whoro about 1200 men aro under canvas. The men also complain that they were underfed. The local feeling is that there sliould be a thorough investigation by the authorities. iTRADING THOUGH BANKRUPT., OPERATIONS IN CATTLE. Court oi Appeal on a point of law, ' ESCAPE OF A PRISONER. Auckland, May 27. A man namicd' Daniel South escaped from custody at the Auckland . police station cells this morniilg. South is a single , man, aged 33 yeaTS, who wii9 arrested in Wellesley Street Inst nteht at about 9: o'clock, on charge of being disorderly , whilst drunk. He gavo a good <leal oi trouble when being arrested, and further charges of assaulting Constable Millar and Hill, and resisting a constable in the : execution of his 'duty were preferred against him. This morning at about 7 o clock, when the prisoners Tvere receiving some attention, Sou.th appears to have taken advantage of the momentary 1 opportunity offering, wheni tho door cell was unguarded, to slip away quietly and escape. ■ • • OAMARU DRINKING RESORT.
Oamaru, May 2?. • D. Bruce, convicted of keeping a place of resort for the consumption of liquor, was fined <£5. Several wore fined 10s. each for, being: found on premises used as a resort for the consumption, of liquor. H. .Burko was sentenced to a month, for selling liquor in a No-License area (second offence) and fined ,£5 oosta for ordering liquor and supplying- incorrect addresses of the persons for whom they were intended. ' i The sequel to . the football fracas on 1 M'Lean Park on Saturday week was heard in tho Court yesterday,. when John Weber, Pcrcival Jamieson, and Thomas Martin were each fined £5 and costs for assaulting and obstructing the police in the execution of their duty. Jonn Neilson,. for inciting the crowd to violence, was fined £2 and costs. CHARGE OF SHOOTING WIFE. Dunedin, May 27. Mr. Bailey,.S.M., has granted the petition of ten electors of the Linwood Ward for a reoount of tho votes cast for tho candidates for the City Council at the recent municipal elections, and has ordered that it bo conducted under tho same conditions as govern an official reconnt in a general election. The recount takes place to-morrow. THE TIMARU LUMPERS. Timaru, May 27. The Home-going steamer Norfolk and three coasters were worked in port today, requiring about a> hundred men.' For tho night shift on the Norfolk tonight ten more wero required, and all places wero filled. The Norfolk leaves this morning, and tho Whakatane takes her borth. .RECOUNT OF MAYORAL POLL. Timaru, May 27. The recount of tho Mayoral election votes merely reduced Mr. Angland's majority from 28 to 21. Petitioners were ordered to pay '.£8 ,10s. costs out of their deposit of .£lO.. CONCILIATION COURT, Wanflanui, May 27 A meeting of the Conciliation Court today heard the saddlers' dispute, when an agrr-s'oent was arrived at on all poii.is save preference.
