A WASHING UP.
CARNIVAL SPORTS' FUNDS.
SHORTAGE OF £18. A general washing-up of various matters in connection with the sports events at tho recent Citizens' Easter Carnival took placo at a meeting of the Sportu Committee of tlio Carnival, held at the Town Hall last evening, Mr. A. Mhrryatt (chairman) presiding. Tho chairman reported that tho subcommittee had ascertained that thero was available sufficient prize-money for tho athletics section without calling on tho general funds for anything more. They iccommendcd that a selection of jirizes should bo purchased and forwarded to tho wincrs of the athletic events. This was agreed to. Somo discussion took placo in connection with tho reported deficit in tho prize-money for the Highland dancing events. Tho chairman pointed out that out of i£2s required, only £2 os. Gd. had, been collected by tlio Highland Lanciiig Hub-committee. Tho entries contributed a further .£5, leaving a shortage of .£lB odd, to be made up somehow. It had been represented to tho sports executive that tho Highland Sub-committee had undertaken to collect tho whole amount—in any event, to raiso within a few pounds of that amount—the deficit to bo made up by tho General Committee. On the Strength of these representations, tho programmo for tho Highland section of the Carnival had been approved by the sports executive, and tho prizes won had, there/ore, to bo provided somohow, and awarded.
Air. A. Codgers, a member of tho Highland Dancing Sub-committee, explained that his sub-committeo had conferred with members of tho Scottish Society, and had decided to circulate twelve subscription lists, each canvasser undertaking to collect £2. He had, therefore, informed the chairman (Mr. Marryatt) that he hoped to raise ,£39, but, perhaps, he said then, it would only be ,£lO.
The chairman said he had a clear recollection that Mr. Rodgers had definitely assured him that tho money would bo raised—within a few pounds, at all events. He (the chairman) suggested that Mr. Rodgers should consult with those canvassfrs who had failed to raise what they had undertaken, and see if they could bo persuaded to make good. Mr. Rodgers was to blamo for having led the Sports Committee to believe that only a. small deficit would require to lie' mado up, but it was clear that he nad rilied on the assurances of other canvassers in doing so. It was awkward, but the money had to be found. It was finally agrood that Mr. Rodgers should consult with those who had undertaken to collect subscriptions and see what could bo done, and that a sub-com-mittee, consisting of the chairman (Mr. Marryatt), the secretary (Mr. G. S. Hill), and Mr. Martin Luckie should receive Mr. Rodgers's report, and deal finally with the matter. Tho chairman referred to a letter which had appeared in one of the local newspapers easting certain reflections upon the secretary of tho Carnival Committee, in • connection with the delay in awarding the prizes won in the Highland events. It was duo to the secretary to say publicly that he had nothing whatever to do with this delay. Tho Sports Committee had deferred tho matter pending a decision with regard to tho deficit in tho donations' promised by the Highland Sub-committee.
