'TRADE" IN CONFERENCE.
"A PLACE SECOND TO NONE." FREE LUNCHES A GREAT BURDEN. By Tcleiraph—Press Association—ICopyright1Copyright (Rcc. May 23, 11.20 p.m.) Brisbane, May 23. At the Inter-Stato Conference of the Federated Licensed Victuallers' Associa-
tions,' the president expressed particular gratification at tho fact that New Zealand was represented. One delegate said that they were there to suppress drunkenness, realising that the drunkard was no good to the hotelkeeper, to the community, or to himself. Another delegate claimed that the hotelkeeper had a placo in the economic conditions second to none, not even second to tho Church. There was nothing in the trade to bring discredit upon themselves, so long as they behaved honourably. • The report of tho executive stated that the free lunches had grown a great burden on tho trade. Through tlio selfish and stupid attitude of a small minority lunches had been continued. It was-time the minority was dealt with, and it should: bo made so hot for them that they would be glad to fall into line.. The report was adopted.
