INSECT PESTS.

AN EDUCATION BOARD CHART. Tho Education Department recently issued, at great expense, a coloured chart, purporting to show the insect pests of Australia and New Zealand, and the means by which they should be eradicated. If the opinion of Mr. A. E. Banner, agricultural instructor to the Wanganui Education Board, is correct, says tho Feilding "Star," Mr Banner's experience justifies us in assuming that. _ Iw knows what he is writing about, this is only another instance of the axiom ■ that "a little learning is a dangerous thing," and the Education. Department would be well advised to withdraw the chart until it has been revised. Mr. .Banner points outthat '46 pests aro dealt'with inthe chart, of which only 27 have ever been recorded in New Zealand, and of those 27, 25 per cent, belong to the orange, and grape vine. Under the heading "Formulae;" most of the remedies are obsolete, while suck, an important spray as_ ammonia carbonate of copper ip omitted. There are many mistakes in spelling, and generic names are incorrectly stated, .while important pests like the grass grub, bot fly, hessian fly, and root fungi, have been omitted altogether. It is,, says the "Star," up to the experts of tho Education Department to explain.

One man writes:—"l have received your little book," but, what is more to the point, havo YOU received our little book, which gives particulars of the famous "Victor Vats which will help you to produce better quality cheese? The "Victor" is well made, and will outwear many of the old-fashioned Vats. Of course, the "Victor" is renowned for its sloping bottom, which allows tho whey to run freely. Send for booklet to-day—you'll profit thereby. Albert J. Parton, Plumber, Carterton—Advt. / •
