THE KING IN BERLIN.

SPLENDID WELCOME,

UNION JACK EVERYWHERE. By Telocraph—Press Association-Copyright Rec. May 22, 11.5 p.m.') Berlin, May 22. Their Majesties King George and Quecu Mary have arrived, to attend tho wedding of tho Kaiser's daughter. The Kaiser, the Empress, and many princes welcomed them. There were enormous crowds in the streets, and all were enthusiastic. There was brilliant sunshine when King George and Queen llary arrived. The Untcr der Linden was thronged, and every coign, of vantage was occupied. Tho Union Jack was everywhere in evidence, and the hawkers did a roaring trade selling paper English flags, which have rarely been seen in Berlin during- the past few years. Picked Prussian troop 9 lined the route from the station. There was a vivid picture within the station, where the Kaiser, in tho uniform of a British Dragoon, accompanied by Prince Ernest and Princess Victoria, warmly greeted King George, who woro tho uniform of tho Prussian Dragoons. Tho Royal train was escorted for forty miles by the airship Hansa. As tho Royalties emerged from the station a roar of acclamation went up from tho waiting crowds. King George's carriage was escorted by his regiment of Dragoons. Tho King and Queen were demonstrate ely cheered.

THE KAISER'S CLEMENCY. Berlin, May 21. Lieutenants Trench and Brandon and Bcrtrand Stewart, who liavo been .serving terms of imprisonment for espionage, and who are to be released, as a, mark of clemency on the part of the Kaiser in connection With the coming marriago of his daughter, will be set at liberty simultaneously with the arrival in Germany of King George and Queen Mary.

PRINCIPAL WEDDING GIFT. Berlin, May 21. It is somi-officially stated that the Kaiser's principal gift on tho occasion of tho marriage this week of his daughter Princess Victoria Luiso to Princo Ernest of Cumberland will be tho proclamation of Prince Ernest as tho now ruler of tho Duchy of Brunswick. AN OLD FEUD ENDED: Tho official announcement of tho betrothal of Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia, tho only daughter of the Emperor William, to Princo Ernest Augustus, only surviving son of tho Duko of Cumberland, ended tho long-standing quarrel between tho Guelphs and tho Hohenzollerns, which arose out of tho annexation of Hanover by Prussia in 18GG. Tho efforts of Prince Max of Baden, who is the husband of the Duke of Cumberland's eldest daughter, havo at last succeeded, stated the London "Mail," and the reconciliation is being celebrated in tho capital of Baden, Karlsruhe.

Since ISGG, when Prussia annexed tho Kingdom of Hanover' ill consequence of tho support given by Hanover (o Austria, the disinherited Royal Family has refused to abandon its claim to the Throne, and tho Empire has accordingly set its face against tho of a "Cumberlander' in Brunswick. When King George V died in Paris in 1878, his son tho present Dnlce Ernest Augustus promised him never to abandon his claim, and so, when Duko William of Brunswick rlind in IPS 4 without issue. Prince Alhrecht of Prussia was appointed Regent. Prince Albrccht died in 1006. and thero was then a fresh and prolonged dispute. The Duko of Cumberland offered the Emperor a renunciation of claims to Brunswick on behalf of himself and his eldest son, Prince George Willinm, but no settlement could be concluded, and, in tho end, tho Regency was conferred upon Duke John Albert of MecklenburgSchwerin, who was then married to Princess Elizabeth of Sr.xe-Woimar, nnd.whn, after her death, in 1908, married Princess Elizabeth -of Stolberg-Rossla. In Mnv of last year the Duke of Cumberland's elder'son, Prince Georgo William, was killed' in a. motor-car accident. His younger brother, Prinoe Ernest Augustus, whose betrothal is now in question, came to Potsdam to express gratitudo for tho sympathy shown by the Prussian Royal Family. The relations thus re-established have been carefully fostered, and it is ovidently hoped that a Royal marriage will now finally seltlo "tho Brunswick question," and fill up the one remaining gap in tjie Federation of German Princes. Princo Ernest Augustus (said a Berlin correspondent) will now join tho Prussian Army and become an officer of tho Zieten Hussars, a regiment of which his grandfather and great-grandfather were colonels. Tho press and the Reichstag and several other Parliamentary assemblies havo offered tlio customary loyal congratulations to-day, and the German public as a wholo is probably favourable to the marriage and to the political arrangements which aro exnected to ensue. For tho present the official press confines itsolf to congratulations upon_ what it calls a lovo match, and the "North-Ger-man Gazette" speaks of tho loving care with which the F,nvperor and Empress have granted their only daughter her heart's desire. Beyond all doubt everybody will wish well to the p"t,ulnr oml able Princess and to. Prince Ernest. Au. gustus, who has made a very good impression during his service in the Army in Bavaria.
