An early start was mado with the New-town-Athletic fixture, the tenuis-..taking tho field at 1.30 p.m. Athletic, who were favoured by having tho wind and th<? . sun at their backs, did not have all tho better of matters in the first spell, and Newtown actually opened the scoring, Georgo kicking a penalty goal from a difficult position. _. Soon after tho' kick-out Strickland mado afiuo run in an endeavour bo augment the Newtown score, but he was safely tackled in good timo by ..Ryan, For the remainder of tho spell; Athletic held the advantage, but it was not until some time later that Wilson scored for them. Thif was the score at half-time., From the commencement of tho second spell, Newtown worked vigorously to,wipe off tho deficit, but before any score came to them they had to submit to a further score by Athletic. Bradjey gained a try under the posts, but failed with the kick.- Athletic 13, Newtown 2. The turn of the tide came when Newtown were awarded a penalty, Campbell placing a magnificent goal from the half-way line. Athletic 13, _ Newtown 4. This success caused the Newtown backs to double tliei.r efforts, and very, soon, as tho result of good work by Strickland and George, the latter scored in good position, and'Strickland converted. 'In a few minutes Newtown again ;camc to tho attack, and an excellent passing rush saw the ball travel through the hands of .Strickland, M'Cardell, and George, to Scobie, who scored. Bradley , then had a chanco to incrcasa Athletic score by a penalty shot, but a weak effort lost his side tho game, for Strickland was shortly after given a chance for Newtown iji a difficult position, and he made no mistake. HOLLOW VICTORY FQR PETONE. lii tho second match, Petone secured an easy win over Hutt, and proved the better team in all departments. The scoring account of Petone was opened by A. House, who gained a try as tho outcome of a single-handed effort. Ashfcm failed to convert. Potono 3, Hutt o. There was no further scoro during the first spell. The second half was simply a triumphant march for Petone. Within a few minutes, tho concerted efforts of Barber, Hou'.fc, Miller, Whitley, and 'Piohst'el resulted in a try by the. last-named.'
