SOME BRIGHT AND PAST MATCHES. Bright* sunshine, clear blue 6kies, and • good crowids was tho order of things oa Saturday afternoon. ,It was a decided ' cliango compared with the previous Saturdays, and" naturally «mie fast interest- . iug games resulted. A crowd of over £i 0 peoplo watched the struggle between Wanderers and Corinthians on tho Basin. Heserve, and they were rewarded by seeing ' a good "go." At Mlramnr tboso old opponents, Swifts and Thistle, met, and aiter a hard game the Blues were returned winners by 3 (pals to 1. Brooklyn United and Brooklyn—two new senioi teams this vear—playod an even gamo at Wakefield Ptrk. Following arc the results of the matches played:— Corinthians 1 Wanderers t Thistle 3 Swifts • ... 1 Hospital 3. -Y.M.C.A. 1 Brooklyn United % Brooklyn 1 Diamonds 4 Rovers 0 HOSPITAL & Y.M.C.A.' Tho mateih between Hospital and Y.M.C.A., played on. tho Porirua Mental Hospital ground, proved to bo a bright, last gamo trom start .to fiiiish. Tho turf was in excellent condition, with tho result that accurate play followed on both sid'os. Y.M.C.A. aro quito a young team, and they desorved credit for tho fight which tJiey put up against their older opponents. As usual, Hospital, pressed at the start, and had it not been lor Hollis (in goal) and Coad and Coato (full-backs), . Y.M.C.A. would have had sonic scores put up against them right away. Tho attack was too strong to bo kept up, however, and eventually Hughes managed to break through tho defcnce and land the ball ill tho net witli a dropping shot. All through this spell was characterised by good P'ay, especially in tho back divisions. ot both . Tho second half was, if anything, much faster and keener than tho hret. I no. ball travelled from ono end of the held ■ to tho "at top," and it looked as if thert> was going to bo no further score, when suddenly Hospital put oil two more goals in quick succession. Slimier and • l)a.rbv wciro re.-ponsiblo for tho scores. Not to bo denied. Y.M.C.A. mado strenuous efforts to avert defeat, but tlioy only . nmnagod to tcoro ono goal,, and this came through tho agency of Wlthington, who took advantage of a elip by Young and broko away and scored, llio result of the gamo was; Hospital, 3 goals; Y.M.C.A, i S °Mr. J. M. Wilson was referee. , CORINTHIANS & WANDERERS, As this score indicates, this match ended in a dra.v, but the honours went to Corinthians, and they were most unfortunate ini not putti ig .up ft larger scor9 rgainst Wanderers on tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. It appeared lhat Corinthians weitf in tho same box'as thek oppononts-thit is, thsy were waotiiitf jn combination. Wanderers put up a good, determined ■ defence right thrcut;h tho game, but tW wcro somewhat handitapprd on account of thoir lightness. This yas nude perfectly clear on, Saturdtiy, when they mot a much heavier team. Tho Black ana Whites mado tho game willing, Md Wobsicr Wtuidttors) was
balM, on to save soue fine shots by Roberts. Just bei'oio half-time the Wancorers fonvartls cot fjaing, and witl) practically a clear field they raced away, and Rogers, bein* handy, put the finishing touches on an interesting pieco of' plav. During most of tho second half Conntnians kept their opponents hard pressed, and scoi>?3 'coked certain on many occasions. Lveatu.:illy Bradburv found an opening and placed tho ball in tho net, thus■ making the scores even. From now v ! it® - . sinuous efforts were made on both s»ie3 to gain <in advantage, but result, und the Jinrd whistle blow nich the score 1 all. { Air. A. E. Wells was referee, DIAMONDS & ROVERS. . and open game was witnessed ICelburno, Parle on Saturday afternoon, wxL6n Diamonds met and decisively defeated Rovers by four goals to nil. Diamonds, following up their usual 'tac- •?»_ making flying rushes on the wing*, with smart centreing, out-classed tluir opponents in all departments,, and from tho outset kept the Hovers more or less on the defensive, although the fcitter jriflde several spirited but 'abortive sallies into tho Blacks' terri'tory. Probably Rovers' would have made a very much better showing had their half-back line displayed more. science, and backed up the forward liiie. Nor were the 'backs conspiotiou3 for very brilliant play. The only> redeeming .feature of the piny of tho back division was 'tho form shown by ' G. Martin, who put in an energetic afternoon's work. On the kick-off, tho Diamond t wiug-forwards went off with a rush, which culminated in a cOrner-kiclc against Rovers. Lowe 'took the shot,' but it was badly placed, and no score Resulted. # Immediately after Rovers were, again in difficulties, and Ferguson, the Diamonds centre-forward, scored with a fine drive. Rovers rallied gamely, but the superior pace and combination of the Blacks "put them at a big disadvantage, nttd it was not Ion? before an cither goal was 'added to the\Diamonds' list, Burnish putting the- ha}\ through from a rough-and-tumble scramble in front of tho goal-mouth. Rovers had two narrow escapes from further disaster before the Gpell ended with tho Blacks two goals to the good. , ■l showed that Diamonds had the game well in hand. Liyersnge added, the third goal with a long dropping snot, .then Lowe, getting through the - l iw? 1 ne * scored a fourth, 'the ball flying past. Diamonds again, attack-, &}»..Liversage, with a 'splendid piece of individual play, dribbled right throueh and scored, his progress hearing pathetic testimony to 'tho weakness of .the Rover defences; Rovers then made a determined attempt to force the game, and Berling, getting 'through, drove for tlta goal; but the shot flew wide. Elford\also ! cot through twice, but without result. Still pressing'for a'score, Rovers, forced ' a corner—again no result, and tho remainder of the spell saw Diamonds direct--I?** & constant but unsuccessful fir© unon th 9 Rovers' goal. Mr. Williams was the teferee... THISTLE & SWIFTS. Thistle defeated Swifts nt jYfiramar by three goals to oiie on Saturday, but tho game was not a very interesting one, and there was some rough ulay in the first spell. Give-and-take play ' followed the kick-off, and it was half an hour before Swifts drew blood, Kendall .initiating an attack on 'the wing, which ✓culminated m a ; skirmish in front of the eroal, Mouat driving- tho ball through', thistles immediately drew level with a rushing attack from mid-field, 1 and a sharp rough-and-tumble. in front of the posts, out of which the ball rolled'through. Thistles attacked strongly during the/ second spell, but Shifts broke up their li 11 ® ; '5 e P eft tedly, and gradually worked the OTorm-centre to mid-field, where ensued; an interval of even play, culminating in another rush by the Blues, and a score, Gibson driving in a hot shot. A few- minutes later Barnet. scored a third J^ 10 ' Blues, and the game ended shortly after. Mr. O'Connell was referee.
BROOKLYNUNITED & BROOKLYN. ' two Brooklyn combinations, Brooklyn United and Brooklyn, met at ■ . Wakefield' Bark. Tho latter team had not.had a win this srason, but after the showm? it. jnade 'against Thistle tho t>revions Saturday 'it was' anticipated A fh'at United would have to put their'best, foot foremost .to win, especially as the rivalry between 'the t|vo-hillside*'teams is very keen.' rTho - same " trouble "ris was noticed amongst the-Brooklyn team tho previous Saturday, viz., lack of combination," againtold agaiiist them. Taking tho game from end to end United had the best of it, and tho score of two to nil is a fair indication of the merits of tho two teams. The scoring was aIL done (luring tho first spell, wlien United nut two goals to their credit, both of'.which'were scored by Smith. In 'tho. second term, Brooklyn showed improved form and succeeded in preventing United from further increasing their.score. The final tally was: Brooklyn United, 2;' Brooklyn, nil; Mr. J.
