The weather cleared inland this morning, but a strong southerly is blowine, and it is thick off Lyttolfcon Heads. A poodly number of people went through to tho port, but had a cold, dreary wait. 4 Christchurcn- May 12. Owing to the non-arrival this morning, ihe arrangements made for to-day will be merged as far as possible with those made for "to-morrow. Other minor alterations ■liavo been made in the arrangements, including tho postponement of tho visit of /the school children from schools between ißurnham and Aihburton from to-morrow till Saturday. D. Bell (Minister for Internal Af--sairs) addressed the following letter on the subject to Captain \tlalsey.— ■ t "The Government of New Zealand propose, with your consent, to strike a medal <to commemorate tho-first visit of the vjxittlo-cruiser Now Zealand to_ tli9 Doiuinion from which sho takes her liamo. fl'ho medal will he issued only to niemliers of your ship's company, and it is iioped that tho restriction. of. the number ;to bo struck will cause the souvenir.to bo jbetter appreciated and valued by-the But tho GovciruiuoiLti also desire that tho medal should be a token pf its appreciation of the conduct of your ■men during the visit,- and we therefore (further ask you to accept the duty. , distributing the medals to your ship s company, so that if there !-o any to whom such appreciation should not be expressed, tho token may be withhold from them. f Caption Halsey replied as follows to the Minister's letter:— / "I havo the honour to acknowledge the Receipt of your letter of thi9 dfito (May ■5), and I request that you will convey to the Government my sincere appreciation of their kind thought, which will, I know, be greatly esteemed by my officers and men, and tho medals will be ' highly prized by all the'"recipients. I 1 willinglv accept the duty of distributing tho medals, and will conscientiously observe the wishes of tho. Government in this matter." . Tho medals are to to of silver, but the ilesign has not yet been determined. They Ore to be manufactured in New Zealand.
