REALISM AT THE BUTTS.

KINEMATOGRAPH TARGETS. \n apparatus has been designed whereby kineniatograph pictures may bo employed for the nractico of rifle shooting (states a Homo paper). Iu place of tho usual bull s-oyes, a lantcru screen compowd of two thicknesses of' paper is arranged at the end of tho rifle range, an animat»l photograph of any suitable subject being thrown thoreon -from the. side of tho range. ' ; Associated with tho kineniatograph machine is a relay capable of being operated by tho sound wave set up by the Siring of a l'iile. This relay causes tho Kinomatojfraph machine instantly to conic \ to rest after the firing of every shot, the ycinematngraph machine starting up again after a pause of a few seconds' duration. ' Tho cycle of operations is as follows:— *Tho picture, perhaps, shows some individuals in a motor-car, racing along the road. Taking aim at one of the occupants of the car, the marksman fires and ■(instantly the film comes to rest, showing him (by means of the hole in the paper fercsn) whore his bullet hap. (:one —whether ! he has hit his man, in fact. I Pausing just long enough for this fact to bo noted, the film then starts up again and a sccond shot may bo tried. Meanwhile, however,* further automatic apparatus has caused the two papers forming the screen to shift, one un halt an Jnch or so, and the other down a similar iamount. Thus the bullet holo is obscured, and a clean sheet provided • for 'the second shot. < Kineniatograph pictures, of course, proTide esculent and most exciting targets for much miniature rifle practice. Iney provide tho "real tiling" with a laudable absence of bloodshed. Infantry taking advantage of cover while advancing, may bo "potted" by the miniature riflemen, •while ail'tho excitements of big game hunting may be 'enjoyed—practically in Dili's back .garden! Tliero would appear to bs a big future before this automatic kineniatograph equipment. It is certainly a most ingenious invention by no means devoid of useful features.
