WOOL BILL PASSES.
AMENDMENTS REJECTED.
GROCERS STAND FIRM. By Teleffraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. May 4, 0.30 a.m.) Washington, May 8. The House of' Representatives rejected amendments to the Wool Bill, and passed the Underwood Bill by 193 votes to 74. 1 Washington, May 4. The wool schedule passed quietly. The Republicans presented a blanket amendment,' providing'a rate of eighteen cents a pound on raw wool, and comparative rates based on an eighteen cent duty on the woollen' contents of manufactured woollens. They asserted that the. amendment agreed with 'the recommendations of the Tariff Board. The Democrats denied this. The expected defection of representatives of the wool-growing States failed to materialise. Mr. Springrice called the attention ol tho Administration to the Tariff Bill provision extending a preference of five per cent, to goods imported in- Amercian bottoms. The Democrats recognise that tho provision infringes the treaty, and intend to introduce an amendment abolishing it.
