EVER UPWARD.
VIEWS OF SHIPPING COMPANIES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. May 4, 0.30 a.m.) Sydney, May 4. Sir James Mills entertained a number of representative shipping magnates, aboard tho new steamer Niagara yesterday. Referring to tho gnat enterprise Australasian shipping companies had shown in receiit years, he said a moderate estimate, of the value of tho tonnage belonging to local companies in the Commonwealth and New Zealand was not far short of seven millions. It must bo recognised that not only was there a largely increased capital expenditure on the ships themselves, but the cost of maintenance was als6 increasing by leaps and bouu'ds iii every direction.
