TRAIN COLLIDES WITH A COW.
CARS DERAILED: PASSENGERS INJURED. ' (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Greymouth, May i. On Saturday night tho eiprcs:> train from- Otira ran into n cow about four hundred yards-on the Otira side of Aratika, which is 19 miles from Cm-mouth. Tho accident occurred about 7.50 p.m., it being dark at the time. The train, which was travelling from 20 to 25 miles per hour, consisted of an engine, tlirco cars and one van. Tho locomotive kept to the track, but tho first two cars fell, tho one nearest the engine rolling on its sido. The third' car was derailed, but kept on tho (ruck. Luckilr the coupling from tho engine to tho first car broke. , ». About half a dozen among tho passengers, who numbered about 50, were Bliaken, and received minor injuries, sucli as abrasions and slight cuts or bruises. It is surmised that the cow, after being struck by the engine, got beneath tho first car, causing tho uncoupling. A relief train left Greymouth at 8.30 p.m. with two doctors, returning at 11.S0 p.m.
The cngino and cars were only slightly damaged. It is expected tlint tho lino will bo clear for to-morrow's traffic.
Police Commissioner Gullon litis received a telegram regarding the occurrence from the Inspector of Police at Greymouth, which stales that tho following passes pcrs suffered slight injuries or shock:— Mr. Davidson, of Kumara; Mrs, anil Miss Foster, of Eunanga; Miss Bishop, Miss Bobertson, and Mrs. Hughes, all of Gre.vinouth, and a man named Humphrey, whoso address is not known.
