The "News" lias been making inquiries into tho origin of a cablo message alleged lo h'avo been sent to Barry challenging him to row an unknown scullev oil tho Mokau River •for .£IOOO. _ Tho cable message'was sent from Awakino, a small centre in tho King Country as tho result of an argument at a convivial gathering. Tho "syndicate" (mentioned in tho cable message) is, liowovcr, a myth, and so also is tho "unknown sculler" and the ,£IOOO.
