—♦ T— ,'.... . NEW STATUTES PASSED. COURSE IN. PUBLIC HEALTH. At the meeting of the University Senate this week new Statutes were passed providing for a Diploma in Public Health as follow :— A Bill to amend the statute, Admission Ad Eundem, by adding thereto a newsection as follows:—"V. Any person who holds tho Degree of Bachelor of Science in Public Health, or the Degree of Bachelor of Hygiene, of a British Chartered University, or who holds tho Diploma of Public Health .of any British Chartered University, or of the conjoint Examining Board of the Royal College of Surgeons .and' Physicians, of London, : Edinburgh, or Dublin, may be granted by the Senate .the Diploma of Public Health of the University of New Zealand.". A Bill to. create n new statute, to bo entitled the Diploma in Public Health:— I. Every candidato for the Diploma in Public Health must, bcioro entering for the first examination, have been registered for not less than twelve months, as the holder of a recognised medical qualification. . 11. There shall bo a First Examination and a Second Examination lor the diploma'. ' A candidato may present himself for'these examinations separately, or at the same time. Tho fee lor each of these examinations shall be fivo guineas. 111. The examinations shall bo held in November, and shall be conducted as far as possible by written questions and by oral and practical examinations.' IV. A candidate who has failed in one subject:only of .tho first or second examination shall, on the recommendation of the examiners, be allowed at a subse- I quent examination to take that subject only, and if ho then pass in that sub'ject he shall bo.deemed to have passed the whole of first or second examination, as the case may be. 'The fee for such re-1 examination shall be five guineas. . \ Tho first examination shall include:— 1. Chemistry and Physics, as applied to Public Health (ono paper)—(a) Elements of Chemistry and Physics, Methods of Chemical Analysis, and in particular the Analysis of Air, Water, Food, and Soil. (W Heat, with special reference to Warming and' Ventilation, (c) Disinfectants, their Chemistry and use. (d) Elements of Meteorology, Meteorological Instrutheir, use., ,„% f -.Geology (ono paper)— Elements" of Dynamical Geology, Transport of Material by wind, Rainfall, Surface, 'ah'd Underground water, Ground Water, level, and'its relations.to the surface, Drainage, Porous and Impervious Books, Springs, •. Wells, AVater -.- Supply from springs, wells, and streams. Formation of soil from rocks. Relation of composition of soil to drainage and. stagnancy of surface water. 3.. Pathology and Bacteriology (one paper).—(a) Practical Bacteriology, Detection and Cultivation of. Ba*t::na, Bacteriological Analysis of Air, Water, Food, Soil, (b) Disinfectants—Bacteriological determination of efficiency, (c) Recognition of Para? sites, and Diseases of Animals that are transmissible to man. (d) The General Pathology of Infection. (e) Serums, Vaccines, their preparation and uso; Opsonins and the Osonic index, i. Microscopy, as applied to Public Health (one paper)—(a) Microscopic Examination of Foods—their adulteration, contamination, and parasites, (b) Air, AVater, and Soil— their microscopical impurities.' 5. Inspection of Foods (ono paper)— Special attention to be paid to recognition of ' sound and unsound meat, fruit, vegetables, tinned goods, milk, fish. The Second Examination shall include: i —1. Public Hygiene (one paper)—(a) Sanitation of House, Villages, Towns, Schools, Factories, (b) AVater Supply—sources, storage, purification, (c) Drainage, Sewerage, Disposal of Refuse, General Principles of Sanitary Engineering, (d) Principles of Plumbing and Building Construction, in their application to Dwellings, Hospitals, Schools, including warming and ventilation. 2. Food (one paper) —Food-values, dietaries, storage, preservation, etc. 3. Sanitary Law and Administration (one paper)—(a) Regulation of offensive, dangerous, or unhealthy trades' and occupations, and the diseases to which they give rise, (b) General Epidemiology, with special reference to the origin, pathology, symptoms, propagation and prevention of Epidemic, Endemic, and other Infectious Diseases, both of temperate and tropical climates. (c) Statutes and regulations relating to Public Health. 4. Vital Statistics in relation to Public Health (ono paper). 5. Sanitary Reporting.—A candidate will be required to visit and report on the sanitary condition of some locality assigned to him by the examiners. The following Statute was also passed :— A Bill to amend, tho Statute University Fees.—As to.Section 111, Paragraph I, by inserting before the words "For the Intermediate Dental Examination" the following :—"For the First Examination for the Diploma in Public Health, £o 55.; for the Second Examination, £o 55.; for the examination in single Subject after failure, ,£5 55." Further, as to paragraph i thereof, by inserting after the words "For, the degree of Bachelor of Suf gery, £o 55," the following: "For the Diploma in Public Health, £5 55."
