In tho Magistrate's .Court on Saturday morning, John Power, 61 years of age, was sentenced to tliree rrionths''imprisonment for having stolen a portmanteau and contents (valued at £5) belonging to G. T. B. Da vies. Power pleaded to be given an opportunity: to leave New Zealand, saying that he intended to go to his people in the Old Country. , ■ Inspector Hendry, stated that Power had n "wretched record," and that ■ had he bw.il indicted on this charge he could have/ been declared by the Supreme Court to be a habitual criminal. • MARTIN STREET AFFAIR. Margaret Williams was charged with having, been inebriated in Martin .Street, and with having wilfully broken windows ill the residence of Lottie Hallett. Mrs. Williams, who was represented by Mr. P. W. Jackson, protested that she was innocent, a,nd stated that tho Halletts postered her, and that someone had broken the windows. His' Worship convicted the woman of both charges. No • penalty was imposed for insobriety, but on tho window-smash-ing count slio was ordered to pay £1 Is. in restitution. GAOL FOR SHIP DESERTERS. Frank Cook and William Cook\ wero charged with having deserted the steamer. Rimutaka on October 25, 1912. : ■ Each was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. OTHER CASES. Kathleen. Stanley admitted having loitered in Ghuznee Street for certain purposes. She was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. > On charges of insobriety Philip Sharkey was fined £\, and Nora Nugent 10s. A man was brought up on a charge of having attempted to commit suicide oil March 27 lio pleaded guilty, and was ordered to appear for sentence when called on. ■ He stated that insomnia had driven him to attempt to end his life.
