At Bulls Court yesterday a Maori named Werehana Ilnnia was charged. with having assaulted t'innighfin Epiha. with a loaded whip, so as In cause him considerable injury. Tfie case excited considerable interest locally. The accused, while admitting an assault', said that tho informant hod a grudge ngainst hiin, and liad injured seven of his pigs, including one sow suckling a litter ol' ton. On another oecnsior. Epiha injured two pigs, 0110 being killed almost right out. Tho witness's wife saw the injury caused, and tho witness then wont to Epiha and ho struck him with the whip. Ho did not hit to hurt him. but: lo teach him u lesson. Tho magistrate, taking into consideration that there luid been strong -provocation. and, also .the defendant's position, as chief of live Ngntipas, said bo would avoid as far as possiblo weakening a man with his tribe. Ho would not imprison the accused, who would be lined *£->, and ordered lo pay the costs, which amounted to over J!5.
