OBSTRUCTIONS FOR MOTORS.
LEGAL OPINION OBTAINED. In regard to ilio crossings on tho Hult Road at Pctonc, which havo been commonly called "rcotor hurdles," tho.Petono Borough Council, in view of ttio controversy caused, havo obtained all opinion from Mr. Martin, -Municipal Association solicitor, t'lio main point of which states: No highway authority is entitled to niako any construction upon a road which may servo as a trap to persons lawfully using tho highway. As motor traffic is now so general, and is, moreover,' recognised by statute 1 law, motorists aro as much entitled as any other person to have nothing " ill the way of a trap placed on tho road. A council has no power to construct a footway across a street, though a council can doubtless construct a part of a street at an intersection in a rnoro substantial manner for convenience of foot-passengers, so long as this construction docs not endanger vehiclo traflic of any kind. In auswor to a question, Mr. Martin states that oven if crossings nro likely to endanger motors or their passengers, notwithstanding tho fact that a {.peedlimit by-law has been made, tho council cannot create a dangerous plnco ou the road. J n view of the foregoing facts, the movements of tho Automobile Association in regard to tho Polono Council will 1)0 awaited with interest.
