PUPONGA MINERS' STRIKE

The "Mail's" correspondent 'telegraphs that several liostilo demonstrations havo occurred at Puponea, where tliero lias bcca a strike since Monday week. Last night au attempt was made to burn down tho houso of a deputy who remained at work in his official capacity.. Tho polico havo Ijccu dispatclicd, to tlio scene. In consequence of a rumour that forty minors were oil their way to Puponga to replace the strikers, tlic "latter assembled on the teach and armed themselves v ith, all maimer of olTcnsivo weapons. Tiiero was a considerable wait before tho strikers concluded they had been "hoaxed." One striker broke tho window of n butch- * cri; shop, and stole some meat. He dropped letters oil-tho iloor which led to his identification. Tho union gavo him four hours to leave tho district, which ho did, after paying for tho purloined goods. Tho president of the union states that tho men havo acted entirely on their own responsibility, without reference to tho Federation of Labour or any other'body, which apparently debars them from strike pay.
