" When tho steamer was three hours out they killed the steersman and a passenger, wounded four others—Chinese passengers—tied up Captain Holmes, the chief officer (Mr. Cornwall), and the engineer (Mr. Macartney). A lady missionary .eventually ' persuaded ■them not to kill.the English officers. After stealing fifteen hundred dollars {*£500) in cash and many valuables, the pirates disabled the engines and ' escaped in boats. -
