_——$ SHIPS BUFFETED IN THE STRAIT. The first Teal touch of winter was felt on Saturday evening, when a cold southeasterly arrived in full force. The schooners Falcon and Echo, which left, their berths at Wellington on Saturday, were unable to get outside the Heads, and Consequently tliey bolh anchored in Worser Bay. The ferry steamer llnrnron, which left Wellington at 11.15 o'clock on Saturday night did not arrive in Lyttelton until 2.45 p.m. yesterday. The steamers Palceha and Barenfels, which left Napier between C and 8 o'clock on Saturday night for Wellington, lmd not put in an appearance at midnight Inst night. Tho vessels probably put to sea when they met tho southerly io await the arrival of daylight. The signal station at Seatoun reported last night that a heavy Ben was running at the entrance and heavy rain squalls wero prevailing. Only one or two instances hove been recorded as to the coastal traffic being interrupted.
