Tlie steady development of Wanganui is reflected in its building activities, and also in flip export trado of tho port. During the quarter just ended building permits issued wero valued at iiIG.TOO, whilst for tho tivelvj months ending March the value of new; buildings totalled' J5107,141, as compared with JC87.878 eroctod during tho preceding year. Despite harbour disabilities, the trado of the port is, steadily increasing, and this is evidenced by tho Customs returns, which show that for tlie quarter just ended tho exports exceeded the valuator tho corresponding three-monthly period last year by closo on J217.000, the respective quarterly totals being: 1913, J.-2G2.880; 1912, .£216,097; increase, .£10,783. In almost every department. an advancement of values in tho output is evidenced, but it is in the dairy industry that t'ho most substantial progress. lias been made, cheese ehoiving an advan'co of over ,£SOOO in value, wliilst casein contributed no less a sum than .£2541. Beef, mutton, and wool all did well, wool alone yielding ..£160,000 to flockmasters. When the port is provided with up-to-date harbour facilities and direct trade with tho Homo markets is established, as assuredly will bo dono beforo long, Wonganui's advancement will bo even more pronounced than it is at tho present, .timo.
