THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS.
Aeoording to a circular published by tho Rhodes Trust the number of scholars in residence at Oxford in tho course of tho academic year 1911-12 was 180, of whom 7G wore from the oolonies of tho Empire, 93 from the United States, and 11 from Germany. Tliero wore also in residenoo six ex-scholars (colonial), engaged in cither teaching, reading for examinations, or philanthropic work. Two cix-scholars held fellowships in , Oxford colleges, ono of whom was also a tutor of h.is college. Tko 180 scholars in residenco wcj-o distributed among tho colleges as followßalliol .Mid Lxcter, 11 each; Christ Church, 13; Oriel, 12; Mertou, New College, Queen's, Lincoln, and St. John's, 11 each; Trinity and Hertford, 10 each; Wadhatn and University, 9 each; Pembroke, 8; Brasoncso and Worcester, 7 each; Jesus and Magdalen, 4 oath; Corpus Christi, 3; and ICeble, 1. Tho distribution of the scholars depends partly upon their own clioioe and partly on their merits as judged, by the college authorities. Tho number admitted to any one college is strictly limited. The next qualifying examination for the scholarships of 1914 will bo held alxmt tlie niiddlo of October, 1913, throughout tho United States and in these colonics where qualification is not obtained through t-lio affiliation of tho local universities with t!lio University of Oxford. Tho election of scholars is to bo completed by January 1, 1914, unless special permission is given by the trustees for an extension of timo.
