' 'Sir,—ln reading your ■ paper last week I noticed tho report by the chairman of the Harbour Board re the progress of tho port. One item struck me forcibly—that whs the large surplus. One of the members looking after the interest of the class, he represents proposed to reduce the on shipping. Now, . I would. like .to ask some of 'tho members .of the above -board, - are th'ey aware that there ari men in the employ of the .board (namely, the nightwatch- \ men), working eight-four hours per week, twelve hours per night, and seven nights /per week, Sundays and holidays, for less than one shilling'per hour? This for a corporation who ran put past large surpluses:' Some of the so-called friends of labour have known; this, but remained dumb;. Theso men c,re not old, decrepit men .not fit for anything else.
