(By Teleeraph.—Special Correspondent.) Marton, March 27. The ■ number of accidents at railway crossings was supplemented this afternoon when the Auckland express, going north, collided, with a sulky ooatauing Mr. T. James, architect, of Wanganui, and Mr. J. M'Chesney, v an old and well-known resident, of Martia, and the marvel is that both men escaped being killed. Tho horse was'hit severely by tho cngino and was killed instaitane msly.. . It appears that the two men were "on their way to the racecourse ill connection with some proposed improvements and alterations to the grandstand, and essayed to pass over the crossing on tho Main Tiuiik line about a quarter of a mile from Marfo.i Junction, just as the express was leaving for Auckland. The crossing 's a very open one, and the two men must have been deeply engrossed in conversitio.i not to have either seen or heard tho train as it rounded the curve, more particularly as tho train had not got a proper spe?d, and was only travelling at 'about v fen miles an hour. It would seeni that just than they became alive to their peril, but too lato tp avo.'t disaster, as tho train; was then right on top of them. The two occupants were thrown out heavily, and the trap was overturned. Mr. M'Chesney suffered most, and recei?ed a. sa.-ere injury, to the Ileal, but Mr. James escaped vitli bruises only. Mr. M'Ches.iey was rendered unconscious for a time, but he showed considerable improvement as evening advanced.
