LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD.
A YEAR'S WORK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christcliurch, March 17. At. tho annual meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the chairman stated that the financial position was a very sound one. Thy paid lor all the work out of ordinary revenue. The total receipts for 1912, including a credit balance of -,£44 7s. !)d. and <£9812 Us. 3d. received for the Manchester, were .£82,130 2s, sd. liesides meeting- ordinary outgoings, they paid <1111,410 for interest on loans of .L'2(io,ooo, contributed .ij.uud to (lie 'siHiving fund (which- stands at ,078,417), transferred <£13,295 to special renewal luini (bringing it up to .£31,201), increased tho special accident insurance fund by iMOO (bringing the total to .£2460), paid the balnncß owiiig on the dredge Cantby, gradually increased tho working depth of the harbour (which is now 30ft.), paid for the alteration and completion of No. 7 jetty, extended and paid .21-154 for the rat-proof retaining wall, paid J!121I0 for tho Canal Commissioner's report, paid about .£7OO for additions to tho time ball dwelling, expended about .£SBOO on reclamation works, provided and paid for tally clerics' shelter. X 144, improved the skeleton wharf at a cost of .£194, also tho cattlo yard (.£400), besides providing for many other permanent and substantial improvements, and start tho year with a credit balance of .£2201 on the general account, .£31,201 oil the special renewal fund account, and .£2400 on the special accident fund account. Against a total liability of .£200,000, the board, has already provision up to nearly v 3l per cent, for its ultimate extinction, and has unencumbered assets well written down to over 000. The Engineer keeps all work;-, plant, and machinery in thorough repair out of the port's ordinary, roveuue. The trade of the port was satisfactory. Imports represented <£3,174,398, against ,£2,997,203 during 1911, nn increase of =6177,195. Exports were respectively .£2,903,493 and .£2)751,012, an increaso of <£152,481. Vessels for 1912 which arrived at Lyttelton were 2299, aggregating 2,241,728, an increase of 31 vessels and 108,077 tons.
