SIB RICHARD NICHOLSON. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. March 18, 11.35 p.m.) London, March 18. Tho death is announced of Sir Richard Nicholson, Kt., formerly of New. Zealand, aged 81. Sir Richard Nicholson (ihen Mr. Nicholson), joined the surveying sialf of the New Zealand Company in 1843, and assisted to lay out the town of Wanganui, or I'etre, as it was originally called, and was later appointed surveyor to la- out tho town and country sections at Dunedin. On his return to England Sir Richard Nicholson became a solicitor and was charged with the claim of tho Earl of Shrewsbury and Talbot io t lie Earldom of Shrewsbury and tho estates annexed to the title, which was successfully established in 18G9. He contested Ilastin-s in tho Conservative interest in 1876.and in 1880 was knighted.
