POLAR EXPLORATION.
Sir,—ltis pleasing to witness thn prompt and generous responso for funds on behalf of the Scott expedition, some forty to fifty thousand pounds having already, been raised. Moreover, the British Government will also assist in providing for (he widows and orphans, so that no 'more money will required. Since tho .news of the Scolt disaster came to hand, intelligence of another tragedy has arrived, equally sad, two members of the Mawson expedition having lost their lives whilst endeavouring (o lift tho veil of mystery which surrounds these inhospitable regions. Tlis relations of these unfortunate men will undoubtedly need financial.assistance, and it would, I think, bo a graceful and generous act to raise a public fund on .their behalf.
The Maivson expedition has discovered new territory, and doubtless enlarged our knowledge of "Polar conditions. If t'le New Zealand Parliament intends to assist Polar exploration, a fine opportunity presents itself, since the Mawson expedition is purely Australasian, and well worthy of support. Trusting that yon, sir, wiil use your powerful influence in advancing this claim,—l am, etc., A. 13. COUZINS. Brooklyn, March 11, 1913.
